Abstract
The nutritional compositions as well as phytochemical constituents of chaya leaves (Cnidoscolous aconitifolius) were investigated using standard methods. The results of the investigation showed the presence of moisture to be 2.86±0.02%, ash- 14.22±0.02%, crude fibre- 16.37 ±0.16%, crude fat- 7.39±0.19%; crude protein- 14.7±0.03%, carbohydrate- 44.31±0.16% and energy- 1276±10%. Mineral elements determined were sodium- 269.40±0.02mg/100g, potassium- 2030.02±0.03 mg/100g, calcium- 616.00±0.10 mg/100g, magnesium- 2.00±0.02 mg/100g, manganese- 2.00±0.02 mg/100g, copper- 0.03±0.10 mg/100g, iron- 20.60±0.20 mg/100g, zinc- 2.74±0.01 mg/100g, chromium- 0.06±0.10 mg/100g, lead- 0.07 mg/100g. The phytochemical screening of chaya leaves (Cnidoscolous aconitifolius) revealed the presence of saponin, tannin, phlobatanin, alkaloid, phytate, phenol, cardiac glycoside and terpenoid. But flavonoid and anthraquinone were not detected. Pearson correlation using Number Cruncher Statistical Package revealed a positive correlation between pairs of proximate parameters. This study was undertaken to determine the nutritional composition as well as screen the leaves for phytochemical compounds. This is imperative so as to let those consuming the leaves to be aware of its nutritional values.
