Abstract
The essential oil content of the rhizome of curcuma longa was studied. The ethanol extract of the rhizome yielded yellowish oil (3.0g). The oil was subjected to GC- MS analysis. Five compounds were identified with an ester, 3-methyl-2-butenoic acid, 3-phenyl-2-propenyl ester (45.64%) constituting the bulk of the oil, followed by a a ketone, known as curlone (26.84%) and a carboxylic acid, 9-octadecenoic acid (16.78%). Other Compounds identified in the roots were 3, 5-di-tert-butylphenol and tumerone. The presence of these compounds in the plant made it possible for the use of roots of curcuma longa extract in phytomedicine in Nigeria for the treatment of cancer, eczema, infections, etc and as a spice in foods.
