Isolation and Characterization of 5, 7 – Dimethoxy, 4’– Propoxyflavone from the Seed of Mucuna flagellipes

Abstract
This study was carried out to identify the bioactive constituents of the seeds of Mucuna flagellipes, a leguminosae. The seeds were milled and soaked with ethanol and later partitioned with different solvents. The chloroform fraction was subjected to column chromatography over silica gel (200 mesh) and eluted gradually with petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol. A thin layer of chromatography was carried on the elutants. spectroscopic (IR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR and MS) techniques were employed to isolate, characterize and identify the active constituent from CHCl3 extracts of the seeds. The chemical investigation resulted in the isolation of a new flavone, 5,7 – dimethoxy, 4’– propoxyflavone. Flavones have been reported to have antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The presence of this compound in the seed of Mucuna flagellipes justifies the use of this medicinal plant in traditional medicine for the treatment of diarrhea by the herbalists. This compound isolated from Mucuna flagellipes seed suggests that the seed would be effective in the treatment of elephantitis, wounds and some infections.
